IMAP Clients


Incoming Email
  • Server Name:
  • Server Type: IMAP
  • NB Must use Encryption: either TLS (using the standard IMAP port, 143) or SSL (using the imaps port, 993)
Outgoing Email
  • SMTP Server Name:
  • SMTP Authentication must be used ('My outgoing mailserver requires authentication')
  • SMTP must be encrypted using TLS (on the standard SMTP port 25, or SMTP Submission port, 587) or SSL (using the smtps port, 465)

If using TLS then using the SMTP Submission port (587) instead of the standard SMTP port (25) might avoid problems with the transparent proxies used in some ISPs and other locations.


The current SSL certificate has not been bought, so will not be recognised and you will get a warning.

Specific Mail Clients: Outlook 2003

Go to the 'Tools' menu, then 'Accounts' and click 'Add new email acount'.

Select 'Server Type: IMAP'.

Then fill in the following details:

Your Name: your name as you want it to appear in emails
Email adddress: (replacing 'you' with your username)
User Name: your username
Password: your password
Incoming mail server (IMAP):
Outgoing mail server (SMTP):
Do not tick 'Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)'

Before proceeding, click 'More Settings'. On the 'Outgoing Server' tab, tick 'My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication'. Select 'Use same settings as my incoming mail server'. Again, do not tick 'Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)'. Switch to the 'Advanced' tab, and tick 'This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)' in both boxes. Also change the port number next to "Outgoing server (SMTP):" from '25' to '465'.

Outlook Express

  • Go to 'Tools' menu, 'Accounts', and then click on 'Add -> Mail'.
  • You'll get a 'new email account' wizard. Fill in your name as it asks, and then your email address in the form '' (replacing 'you' with your mediagraft username).
  • Choose 'My incoming mail server is a 'IMAP' server'
  • Your incoming server is ' and your outgoing server is ''.
  • Your account name should be your username.
  • Do not tick the 'SPA' (Secure Password Authentication) box.
  • Don't download folders when it asks, because we need to make some changes before things will work.
  • Go back into 'Tools | Accounts' from the menu, and choose the 'Mail' tab.
  • Click on the new '' account and click 'Properties'.
  • Click on the servers tab.
  • Under 'Outgoing Server' Click on 'My server requires authentication'.
  • Go to the advanced tab.
  • Under 'Server Port Numbers' tick both of the 'This server requires a secure connection (SSL)' boxes. Change the 'Outgoing mail (SMTP)' port number to 465.
  • Click ok.
  • You can now let it refresh your folder list.

Mozilla Thunderbird

The Thunderbird email client can be downloaded for free from

These instructions are based on Mozilla Thunderbird 0.7.3 running on Linux. If the instructions don't make sense for the version you're using then please let me know and I'll amend them as needed.

  • Launch the 'New Account Setup' wizard (go to the Tools or Edit menu, then 'Accout Settings', and then click on the 'Add Account' button, or run Thunderbird for the first time).
  • You want to create an 'Email account'.
  • Fill in your name, and your email address as in the form ''. Obviously replace 'you' with your username.
  • Select the IMAP type of mail server. The incoming server is '' and the outgoing server is '' (Thunderbird will only ask your for an outgoing server if you do not have one set up already).
  • The incoming username is your normal username.
  • It doesn't matter what you use as the accout name.
  • That completes the wizard, however we need to tweak some settings by hand to make it work.
  • Go to the 'Tools' or 'Edit' menu, and then to 'Account Settings'.
  • Go to 'Server Settings' for the approprate account and tick the 'Use secure connection (SSL)' tickbox.
  • If were asked for the 'Outgoing Server' details, then click on 'Outgoing Server (SMTP)'. Under 'Use secure connection' tick 'SSL'.
  • If you were not asked for the 'Outgoing Server' details, and you do not want to use your existing outgoing server, then you will need to add one. This is only possible in Thunderbird 1.5 or newer. Click on 'Outgoing Server (SMTP)', then on the 'Add' button. It doesn't matter what you use as the description, the 'Server Name' is '' and you should tick 'SSL' next to 'Use secure connection:'. Click ok. You then need to select on the '' account name, which should bring up a 'Default Identity' section on the right. At the bottom is 'Outgoing Server (SMTP):' which can be changed from 'Use Default Server' to the server that you have just created.
  • Click on 'OK'.

You should now be able to access your email. Clicking on the 'Get Mail' button with the appropriate Inbox selected will trigger Thunderbird to download your email.
